A pedigree is a family tree that enables us to discover a cat’s ancestors.
Each cat association has its own “family tree” with its own
registration codes for each cat and its color and race
.
In Italy, cats registered in the “book of origins” of the ANFI association
(which is a part of FIFe, an international organization) are catalogued
following a specific color code known as the "EMS code"

Il The EMS code makes it possible to exactly define a particular coloring,
the race to which a cat belongs and other characteristics of a given cat,
expressed in a code composed of letters and numbers.

Cat registration procedures follow different rules in North American
associations and the denominations of the single colors are also different.
It is very important for breeders to have a pedigreed database in order
to evaluate the “quality” of potential mating between two cats
and thus effectuate a selection that aims toward the objective of healthy cats
with good temperaments and adherence to standards for the future kittens..
